A Step by Step Instruction on how to Draw a Goblin
Step 1. Our goblin is quite well built. He has quite a human figure. However, its posture and aspect angle deform the proportions. That’s why you need to be very attentive. Pay attention to the head that’s disproportionately big and arms that are located quite far from each other. By the way, the lower part of the left hand is located almost in front of the left ankle. If we, in our heads, make the hand that’s located on the left side from us longer, it will almost be near the knee of the leg located to the left from us. One more peculiarity is that, on this step, you need to draw the head so that it’s a bit turned sideways.
Step 2. Let’s part the evil face of the goblin and outline the cloak. At first, we draw 2 perpendicular lines on the face. One of them (the vertical one) will serve as a line of vertical symmetry. It should be a bit shifted to the side of the head’s turn. The other one (horizontal) is the line of the eyes. It should be a bit curved so that to show the tilt. The lines of the nose and mouth will be located lower than the line of the eyes. Pay attention to the fact that it is located caricaturely close.
When you draw the cloak, use smooth lines so that not to be mistaken about the size of it. The lines of the arms will guide you.
Step 3. We forgot to tell you that you should start making the thin stickman more volumetric on the previous step. We go on doing it. We outline the part of the body that we see and make the arms more volumetric. It will be easier to do it if you imagine the parts of the arms in the form of simple geometrical figures – for example, in the form of deltas. Elbows and fists are in the form of circles. Shoulders and forearms are in the form of cylinders.
Step 4. Let’s go on working on volume. We outline the groin area of the body and the leg. Just the way we previously did it, we imagine the parts of the body in the form of simple geometrical figures. The groin area is a triangle, hips and calves are in the form of cylinders, knee joints we draw as circles for now. We forgot to tell you that when you draw all the things described on this step you also need to be guided by the lines of the stickman. Actually, you simply draw over all the lines thus making them volumetric.
Do not forget about the goblin’s means of transport – glider. Make a sketch of it with light and barely seen lines. You do it on this step. Be the way, according to the classical version, glider is the means of transport that goblin took from the Green Goblin. However, in the Spiderman cartoons, that we mentioned in the beginning of the lesson, everything is vice versa. The goblin appears earlier than his green friend.
Step 5. The silhouette is ready. Now let’s add details. We’ll do it from head to the legs. That’s why we start adding details on the face. Draw over the outline of the head so that it looks like a long, curved mask. Draw the features of the face – demonic-like half round eyes, a long hooked nose and the smirking mouth. When you draw the hood, pay attention to the big number of creases on its sides and on the bending line of the hood. The line is located behind the back of the head.
Step 6. Now let’s add lines on the mask. First, we draw the lines of the seam that’s located in the area of the forehead. We should point out that the seam is a vertical line that we can’t see. We see only short horizontal lines along all the length of the seam. We draw the same lines along the length of the superciliary arches. Then, we get to the wrinkles. Drawing on this step can be quite complicated. That’s why we decided to give you a close-up view of it:
If you manage to draw in details the teeth, nasolabial folds and wrinkles near the eyes, have a look at the general view of the picture and get to the next step.
Step 7. Next thing we work on is the right arm. Before you get to it, draw over a part of the cloak that’s located in the area of the neck that’s on the right side from you. Then, with the help of the guiding lines, we draw over the outline of the arm and shoulder muscles. Then, we get a bit lower and draw the forearm that’s wrapped in a high glove. By the way, we’ve recently talked about the muscles of the arms. The description is provided in the lesson about a werewolf.
Some things to know about the glove. Pay attention to the fact that it becomes rather wide in the area closer to the elbow. There are also short horizontal creases on this area. The wrist is a very mobile and complicated part of the body. We provide a close-up view of the area to help you:
Now let’s have a look at the general view:
Step 8. With the left arm it will be easier since, we only can see the wrist and the forearm. The rest is hidden from us by the wide cloak. It’s necessary to draw the creases on the glove correctly since they give the effect we need. They make the glove look loose. Actually, the majority of the creases looks like a row of lines that’s a located so that they make up a house-like shape. Do not forget about the creases on the lower part of the glove and in the area of the wrist. A close-up view of the wrist:
As a rule, we also give you a general view:
Step 9. Draw over the cloak. You need to draw over the part of the cloak that’s behind the back. Frame the outline of the cloak, draw over its lapel that’s on the right side from you and add creases on the cloth. There are more creases in the area of the shoulders. Draw the creases with the help of smooth lines. Do not forget to define short lines of the creases on the lapel.
Step 10. On this stage, we’ll outline the body and the bag. We don’t need to outline the muscles of the body because the clothes he wears are loose. Besides, we only can see a small part of all his body. We need to first frame it and then draw over the creases with the help of shirt smooth horizontal lines. Draw the belt that’s fastened on the clothes with the help of several small straps.
Do not forget to outline the buckle that’s in the center of the belt. A big part of it is hidden, you can only see the edges. Get to drawing the bag. Pay attention to the clasp in the center of the bag, the place where the belt is fastened and the border on the edges of the bag.
Step 11. Draw over the legs of the goblin. Drawing on this stage is quite easy since we don’t also need to outline the muscles of the legs. The pants of villain are loose and are made of quite thick material. The only interesting thing on the stage is a hooked toe-cap of the boot that’s on the right side from us. It is fastened to the locking pin of the glider.
Besides, do not forget to outline the lapel of the boot that’s located in the area of the calf muscle. One more important detail is wrinkles. There aren’t many of them. There are some in the area of the ankle and they look like short horizontal hatches.
Step 12. On this final step, we’ll draw the legendary glider of the goblin. The wings of the device are of the carved, figure-like form. They are like the wings of a dragon. There are smooth lines on the outer side of the wings. They are in the form of the veins. This makes them look even more like the wings of a dragon. Horns are also an important detail. They are located on the front side of the glider. They have lines (in the area of the edges) that give us the effect of the metallic glow. On the very front area of the glider, you need to draw 3 spots. These spots as if create the face of a ghost. Outline the parts of the left from us boot that we can see.
We also need to add shadows on the stage. We’ll do it in a comics style. The shadows look like rough, contrast-like black spots and lines (you’d better use a soft pencil for it). In the areas, where there should be lots of shadows we apply the method of drawing them in two steps. First, we draw the outline of a shadow, then, we paint over it. One more thing to remember is that the shadows are of the same form as the creases on the clothes. For example, like the ones located in the area of the groin or in the area of the gloves.
