How to Draw a Star in Pencil

It seems that drawing a star is very easy. However, try to draw it evenly so that the star has the right shape. Try to do it without reading the lesson. We doubt that you’ll manage to draw it ideally symmetric. Before you start drawing five-point star, you need to draw a circle with the help of dividers. Then, you divide the circle in even parts. In order to do it, you need to stick to several rules of geometry. You may draw a standard five-point star that every sheriff has. However, you may as well draw a different star. For example, a sea star or the star on the point of the chiming clock. On this lesson, you’ll learn to draw a five-point star in pencil step-by-step. On the last step, we’ll color the edges of the star with the help of a red pencil or paint.

1. In order to draw a star, you need dividers.

First, you need to draw an even circle. You may do it with the help of dividers or a cup. You need to turn a cup upside down and put it on the paper. Don’t press on the pencil much. Later you’ll need to erase the outline with the help of an eraser. The size of your circle should be in accordance with the size of your future star.

2. Divide the circle in 5 even parts.

Now, you need to divide the circle in 5 even parts. In order to do it, you need to remember the rules of geometry. Draw 5 dots on the circle. They should be on one and the same distance from each other. Now, you need to connect the dots the way it is shown on the picture.

In order for your star to look volumetric, you need to necessarily draw its edges. One side of the star should be darker a bit. It’s very easy to draw the edges. You need to connect the upper points of the sharp angles with the lower obtuse angles. You star is almost finished. You only need to color it or hatch with the help of a pencil.

4. The final step.

Now, you need to erase the crossed outlines inside the star as well as carefully erase the basic outline (the circle).

5. How to check if the points of the star are symmetric.

If you managed to draw the dots so that there is one and the same distance between them, the sides of the star should be symmetrical as well as the distance between the points should be equal. The easiest way to check if it is so, is to turn the sheet of paper and see if the points are symmetrical from each side. If there is a need, you may correct the picture before you either color or hatch it.

6. Shadows on the edges of the star.

If you drew a sea star, there is no need to draw precise edges. Make each side of the star darker with the help of light hatches. The same you do with a five-point star. You need to necessarily hatch completely one side of a five-point star or a sheriff’s star so that to make the star more volumetric and contrast. Your hatches need to be in one direction. They should be straight. The distance between the hatches is one more hatch. Now you should have the correct picture of a star. If you decide not to add shadows with a pencil, color your star. You may use any color you want.

Draw a circle and divide it in halves with a straight line. We hope you, probably, manage to draw the circle without using dividers. In almost all our lessons, we use dividers. Therefore, you probably have enough practice. If you can’t do it, you may take a glass or a cup. You need to run a contour of it.

You need to divide the circle in 5 equal parts. It’s impossible to do it by eye. Each pupil has a protractor. It is used in geometry. There, the grades are marked. You may also find a half-circle there. You may use it to draw the circle as well. If you don’t have a protractor, don ‘t worry. On this lesson, we’ll only need a ruler. So, mark the place of 72 grades in both directions from the vertical line with the help of a protractor.

Then, from the drawn line, we, once again, mark the place of 72 grades. You do it up until your circle is divided in 5 even parts.
